OTA 240 - OTA Professional Seminar

Description: This course is designed to assist the student in preparing for a career as an occupational therapy assistant by preparing the student in transitioning to OTA practice. Students will reflect on behaviors and skills learned in the didactic, as well as the clinical portion of the program up to this point. Levels of OT/OTA practice and supervision types will be discussed along with functional ethics, professional communication, cultural sensitivity, intraprofessional and interprofessional collaboration and management issues will be explored. Students will also become familiar with the process of applying for and preparing for the NBCOT COTA exam, including understanding the format and design of the test and applying for state licensure.

Prerequisites: OTA 140  with a minimum grade of 2.5. OTA 170   with a minimum grade of 2.5. OTA 180   with a minimum grade of 2.5. OTA 190   with a minimum grade of 2.5. OTA 210   with a minimum grade of 2.5.

Course Competencies
1. Integrate knowledge and understanding of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) Occupational Therapy Code of Ethics and AOTA Standards of Practice for ethical decision-making in professional interactions and occupation-based client interventions.

2. Outline effective communication with patients, families, communities and professional team members in the promotion of health and wellness.

3. Determine strategies for ongoing professional development for delivery of current and acceptable evidence-based interventions.

4. Explain how the role of a professional, including advocacy, is enhanced by knowledge of and involvement in national, state, and local occupational therapy and professional associations.

5. Outline the varied roles of an occupational therapy assistant as a clinician, educator, research assistant, and business practitioner.

6. Examine applicable national requirements for credentialing and state requirements for licensure, certification, or registration.

7. Outline professional abilities and competencies as they relate to the development of a resume and the practice of interviewing skills.
