OTA 170 - Pathophysiology and Occupation for OTA Credits: 2 Lecture Contact Hours: 2 Description: This course highlights pathologies and disease management commonly seen in occupational therapy practice across the lifespan. Students will analyze the effects of disease and conditions of various body systems, both physically and psychologically. Students will explore appropriate occupation-based interventions and the role of occupation in promotion of health and well-being.

Course Competencies 1. Summarize the pathologies of conditions commonly seen in occupational therapy practice.
2. Differentiate between normal physiology and alterations in homeostasis that lead to diseases of various systems including cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, urinary, endocrine, reproductive, muscular, skeletal, nervous and immune systems.
3. Outline risk factors and behaviors that lead to alterations in body systems.
4. Analyze the effects of disease and conditions, including mobility, on occupational performance across the lifespan.
5. Examine professional literature, including the quality of the source, to help make evidence-based decisions.

7. Examine physical and psychological reactions to disease and injury.
8. Outline treatment and prognosis of conditions commonly seen in occupational therapy practice.

10. Determine occupation-based interventions that can be delivered in a safe and effective manner.
