OTA 130 - Foundations of Occupational Therapy Practice

Description: This class introduces the basic principles in occupational therapy, including history, philosophical base and core concepts related to current and emerging practice areas. Through lecture and lab sessions, theories and models will be presented as a way of guiding occupational therapy practice, task analysis and the role of the Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) in various practice settings. The occupational therapy process will be explored, as well as concepts of client-centered care and therapeutic use of self. The impact of cultural, socioeconomic and political influence on occupational therapy practice and health practices will be discussed. Documentation, insurance reimbursement and evidence-based practice research that supports professional, ethical occupational therapy practice will be introduced.

Prerequisites: Admission to the Occupational Therapy Assistant Program. BIOL 238   with a minimum grade of 3.0. MATH 102   or MATH 113   or MATH course higher than MATH 113  . OTA 110  . PE 147  .

Course Competencies
1. Summarize the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) Standards of Practice for occupational therapy practitioners.

2. Apply the Occupational Therapy Code of Ethics for occupational therapy practitioners.

13. Explore the impact of community access on client participation in occupations.

14. Outline current policy issues impacting occupational therapy practice.

15. Illustrate how evidence-based practice, tests and measures and professional literature contributes to occupational therapy practice.

16. Examine the role of documentation in identifying the distinct value of occupational therapy, providing a rationale for treatment choices and communicating with other healthcare providers as well as reimbursement specialists.

17. Integrate professional literature as a source for evidence-based decision making in occupational therapy treatment.

18. Outline strategies for using assistive technology and adaptive equipment to enhance occupational performance.

19. Outline necessary safety regulations and precautions throughout the occupational therapy process.

20. Illustrate the principles of the teaching-learning process as it applies to occupational therapy interventions.

21. Examine the role of occupation in the promotion of health and wellness of persons across the lifespan.

22. Explore the relationship of occupational therapy to other disciplines in building an interprofessional team to effectively deliver patient-centered care and education.

23. Perform techniques to enhance functional mobility that include mobility aids and devices.
