OTA 180 - Occupational Performance in Geriatrics

Description: This course explores the principles of occupational therapy with the geriatric population, including physical, cognitive and psychosocial aspects of aging. Barriers to occupational performance will be addressed through case studies and interactive activities. Disease processes, occupational therapy evaluations and treatment techniques with emphasis on evidence-based practice and ethical decision-making will be examined.

Prerequisites: OTA 115   with a minimum grade of 2.5. OTA 120   with a minimum grade of 2.5. OTA 130   with a minimum grade of 2.5. OTA 135   with a minimum grade of 2.5.

Course Competencies
1. Examine common clinical conditions and age-related changes to body systems impacting occupational performance, health and well-being of the geriatric population.

2. Examine frames of reference for selection and administration of assessment tools for the geriatric population given the client’s needs, culture and context.

3. Examine the OT process in the delivery of services to the geriatric population to promote and maintain occupational participation.

4. Apply theories and models in occupation selection for the geriatric population.

5. Propose cultural or social factors that may affect the teaching learning process in geriatrics.

6. Analyze the influence of socio-political, cultural, spiritual and physical contexts on occupational participation.

7. Outline personal and client safety considerations, precautions and contraindications for rehabilitation of aging body systems.

8. Determine relevant information regarding functional capacity of the geriatric population.

9. Communicate assessment observations to the Occupational Therapist (OTR) in an accurate and professional manner that address occupational performance in the geriatric client.

10. Determine appropriate rehabilitation strategies for clients with dementia and cognitive disorders.

11. Perform techniques of functional mobility enhancement, including physical transfers, wheelchair management and other mobility devices for the geriatric population.

12. Explain the role of the OTA, as well as members of the treatment team, including engagement in the consultative process in various geriatric settings, including hospital-based, home-based and community-based.

13. Examine the role of the OTA as an advocate for changes in the healthcare system and service delivery policies in relation to geriatrics.

14. Provide input regarding safe discharge planning of the geriatric client, including recommendations for environmental modifications and referral for post-discharge support.

15. Examine the role of telehealth in relation to geriatric care as a part of the occupational therapy process and health and wellness promotion.

16. Document occupational therapy services to ensure accountability and meet reimbursement standards.

17. Examine policies and regulations impacting the delivery of occupational therapy services to the geriatric population.

18. Promote occupational therapy through education of service providers, consumers, professionals and third-party payers in relation to geriatric care.

19. Outline legal and ethical considerations when working with the geriatric population.
