Description: This course is an integral part of the OTA education. It is designed to provide students the opportunity to gain introductory-level experience through directed observations and service delivery in a clinical setting. This experience provides exposure to the roles and responsibilities of the COTA and OTR, as well as issues that impact service delivery. Students will focus on mental health and its impact on occupational performance. Emphasis is placed on development of professional behaviors, therapeutic use of self and application of information learned in previous and current courses. Issues that impact service delivery will be explored. Prior to the start of the clinical experience, students must provide proof of current certification in CPR with Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers from the American Heart Association, as well as any other site-specific documents as required, such as a criminal background check, immunization record, drug screen, TB test, flu shot, etc.

Prerequisites: OTA 115   with a minimum grade of 2.5. OTA 120   with a minimum grade of 2.5. OTA 130   with a minimum grade of 2.5. OTA 135   with a minimum grade of 2.5.

Course Competencies
1. Demonstrate professional behaviors, including effective communication, ethical decision-making and adherence to HIPAA regulations.

2. Demonstrate appropriate safety precautions for the protection of the client, staff and self in a mental health setting.

3. Implement components of occupation-based interventions in a mental health setting.

4. Describe the client’s response to treatment or purposeful activity through site-specific documentation requirements.

5. Communicate the role of the OTA and OT in the mental health setting, including effective inter- and intraprofessional collaboration.

6. Examine factors that impact delivery of mental health occupational therapy services for persons, groups and populations.

7. Analyze information obtained from clinical observations in a mental health setting.

8. Determine factors to consider when implementing a discharge plan from mental health occupational therapy services.

9. Facilitate successful relationships with clients and staff in the mental health setting, including demonstration of therapeutic use of self.
