Nursing: Licensed Practical Nurse to Registered Nurse Option (LPN to RN) Program Application Information

Schoolcraft College offers an option for Michigan Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) who are interested in becoming Registered Nurses (RNs) with an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in nursing education. This is not a separate program but an advanced placement option within the Nursing Career Ladder Curriculum (NCLC).
- Following successful completion of the RN program requirements, students are eligible to take the NCLEX-RN exam and apply for licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN).
- Students should meet with an Academic Advisor to review general education courses that may be transferred toward the degree. Students are accepted after pre-admission requirements are met and as space is available.
- Applications are accepted on a continual basis for Fall semester each year and the number of placements varies per year.
The Nursing Career Ladder Curriculum (NCLC) is rigorous and challenging. It requires a high level of student commitment and mastery of content in many academic areas. Essential information about the Nursing Career Ladder Curriculum:
- Nursing courses are offered during day/afternoon sessions at the Livonia campus. Second year courses are scheduled into four 7-week sessions.
- Computer use and computerized testing are required for all nursing courses.
- In addition to course lectures, laboratory and clinical practice are required. Computer use and computerized testing are required for each course. Students will need to have a computer device for home and on campus use that meets the requirements as provided at the time of entry. Courses typically include one day of theory and two days of clinical. Clinical sessions are offered on day or afternoon shifts with potential weekend rotations. The clinical days may not be sequential days of the week and will vary based on clinical site availability. Students must meet all requirements as designated by the department, college, and clinical facilities.
- Nursing courses must be taken in sequence or assigned rotation. A minimum grade of 80% in each nursing course and satisfactory clinical performance is required for progression to the next nursing course.
The RN-AAS nursing program is approved by the Michigan Board of Nursing and has received additional national Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN). For more information on MI-Board of Nursing approval and licensure please contact:

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS
Please complete the LPN to RN Option application after reviewing and meeting the following requirements:
| 1. LPN License |
Hold an active, unrestricted LPN license in the State of Michigan. Students having licensure in states other than Michigan should contact the LARA Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs to complete the reciprocity process.

| 2. LPN Work Experience |
Have current work experience as an LPN or recent graduate from a practical nurse program within the last two years. Attach an updated copy of your resume (including the job description and nursing activities) and a pay stub indicating the number of hours worked.

| 4. Transcripts |
It is recommended you request official undergraduate transcripts from all colleges and universities previously attended. Transcripts must be sent directly from the issuing college or university to the Schoolcraft College Record’s Office. To confirm that transcripts have been received, contact the Answer Center & Help Line at 734-462-4426.

| 5. Advising |
The nursing program requires minimum assessment levels of coursework in the areas of math, reading, and writing. Students should meet with an academic advisor to develop an academic plan and retain a copy of their degree audit for submission with this application. Students with prior college-level work or a degree may be exempt from general college placement testing. Students who have submitted ACT or SAT scores that are less than three years old to the Records Office may also be exempt from assessment testing.
Contact the Academic Advising Center at 734-462-4429 to make an appointment to discuss an academic plan and preparation for the TEAS (nursing entrance) exam.
Nursing students should possess and maintain the following to be able to adequately communicate, make decisions, manipulate equipment, perform procedures, and provide indirect or direct quality care for clients in a variety of healthcare settings:
- Sufficient intellectual, psychological, and emotional capabilities
- Sufficient capacity to concentrate for sustained periods of time
- Sufficient communication skills
- Sufficient visual acuity
- Sufficient auditory perception
- Sufficient gross and fine motor coordination
- Sufficient physical abilities and strength required to push, pull, transfer, or move objects/clients utilizing safe patient handling techniques; ability to lift 35 pounds
- Sufficient physical stamina to remain standing for prolonged periods of time

| 6. Anatomy and Physiology Prerequisite |

(Students should meet with an academic advisor to determine the biology courses recommended for students planning to pursue a BSN in the future. There are no expiration dates for acceptable BIOL courses. Students who plan to transfer to a baccalaureate program should take the BIOL 237 and 238 sequence.)

Select first within a set of General Education English Communication courses with a minimum grade of 2.0.

Select one Mathematics course from the following list:
Students should meet with an advisor to determine courses that satisfy academic goals and future BSN program requirements. Math 102 does not transfer toward a BSN degree.

| 10. Admission Exam |
The ATI TEAS Exam (Test of Essential Academic Skills) is a multiple-choice exam that must be taken using the online version. The TEAS Exam includes:
- 31% Reading: Key Ideas & Details (15%), Craft & Structure (9%), Integration of Knowledge & Ideas (7%)
- 16% English and Language: Convention of Standard English (6%), Knowledge of Language (6%), Vocabulary Acquisition (4%)
- 31% Science: Human Anatomy & Physiology (21%), Life & Physical Science (5%), Scientific Reasoning (5%)
- 22% Mathematics: Number & Algebra (16%), Measurement & Data (6%)
- Minimum TEAS Exam scores required are: Composite: 60% (Adjusted Individual Total Score), 68% Reading, 60% English, 60% Math, 50% Science.
- As of September 1, 2022, all TEAS testing used for application must be completed in person, on campus at the Schoolcraft College Testing Center,
- Successful TEAS score results are valid for a maximum of 2 years.
- Four (4) TEAS attempts are the maximum number of attempts allowed for application to Schoolcraft’s program (includes any exams taken at other institutions and Schoolcraft since 9/1/2022.) Any exam results taken at other sites (of the 4 attempts) will not be accepted for application.
- Students may take the TEAS a maximum of 2 times within a 12-month period. Students may not take a third attempt until the first test attempt expires (Ex: TEAS #1 on September 5 and TEAS #2 on February 10. TEAS #3 cannot be taken until the next September on or after the 5th).
- If the student does not pass a TEAS exam, the ATI website has study materials and practice exams available. The Schoolcraft College Learning Support Services Department also provides free personalized TEAS prep plans for success through one-on-one and group formats. - The highest successful score on each section of the TEAS Exam will be accepted from the two attempts within the 12-month period. Students must complete all sections of the TEAS exam to the best of their ability on each attempt for scores to be accepted.
- The Composite score must be 60% or higher on at least one of the two attempts and the lowest composite score for the other attempt of these two attempts must be within a 55-60% range or higher.
Students who may need academic testing accommodations should meet with Disability Support Services Office (734-462-4330) prior to taking the TEAS exam to determine potential accommodations.
TEAS Exam attempts at Schoolcraft College must be scheduled in advance. Fees paid are non-refundable and non-transferable. Students needing to change testing dates will need to pay the full fee. Obtain more information regarding the TEAS exam: https://www.schoolcraft.edu/testingcenter/teas.

| 11. Cumulative GPA |
Attain a cumulative grade point average of 2.5/C+ or better for all college-level prerequisites and supportive courses.

| 12. Apply for LPN to RN Placement |
Complete the student portion of the application and meet with an academic advisor for academic planning and to sign off on the application. The advisor will submit the application and degree audit (received from Advising) to the Nursing Office. Applications are reviewed on a continual basis. The order of acceptance of qualified applicants will be based on the date the College receives a valid application for LPN to RN placement. An application is valid only if all the requirements listed in this document have been met.
All prerequisites must be completed (with a final grade entered) PRIOR to submission of the application for the application to be considered for admission. In the event more than one qualified student applies on the same day, the applications will be ordered based on the highest cumulative grade point average in the prerequisite/supportive courses.
Students who are accepted will receive an email confirmation indicating acceptance and the designated Fall start year. If all student spaces are full, students will be admitted to the next year’s Fall start cohort and will also be eligible to move up to the current year (depending on application date placement), if other students defer or do not meet other requirement deadlines and admission is canceled. Students who do not respond to correspondence by deadlines will be canceled by the nursing department. No students are moved up after August 1 for any given academic year.
Specific information on orientation and other requirements will be sent via Schoolcraft email when available (approximately 4 months before the start semester). Students are responsible for maintaining current contact information for all college communications. Students should get their college email forwarded to their primary email so as not to miss any communications.
Students may defer their admission only one time, otherwise, the student will need to reapply and meet the application requirements at that time. Students who do not meet nursing department deadlines or have been accepted to the program and then are “no call, no show” to start the program, will be canceled and not eligible to reapply to the program in the future.
Admission will be canceled if students do not meet nursing department deadlines for other pre-admission requirements such as orientation and health/clinical requirements and the ability to reapply will be determined upon the nursing department’s review of the situation.

* These courses are supportive courses that must be completed before the end of NURS 250 - Advanced Concepts in Registered Nursing (the last nursing course). It is suggested that students take the supportive courses prior to starting the nursing courses if time permits, but work with an academic advisor to develop a plan to complete these courses.
COLLEGE SUCCESS COURSE
To provide students an opportunity to develop further skills necessary for the demanding field of nursing education, the College offers a nursing specific section of COLLS 130 - Applied Learning Theory for Nursing Majors . This optional course provides instruction on reading efficiency and speed techniques, learning/study strategies, and critical thinking/test taking skills using nursing materials and concepts. Students can contact Academic Advising at 734-462-4429 for more information.
MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS PRIOR TO PROGRAM FALL REGISTRATION by provided deadlines (Requirements subject to change.)
After acceptance, students will receive a packet of information via email regarding post admission requirements that must be completed prior to starting the nursing program. The packet will contain specific deadline dates and further details for the following requirements:
- Participate in a mandatory LPN to RN Student Orientation session.
- Schedule and meet with the Nursing Resource Instructor for a personal interview to discuss educational goals, learning techniques/strategies, and recommendations for success in the program.
- Demonstrate satisfactory performance on clinical skills during a Skills Review session.
- Complete the medication dosage calculations packet prior to the orientation, as a Medication Math Proficiency Exam (includes IV therapy calculations) will be completed at the orientation session. Each nursing course includes dosage calculations as part of the course testing.
- Pay fees and complete any specified computerized assessments and required remediation by the designated deadlines.
- Complete all health/clinical placement requirements and provide documentation including a health questionnaire/physical exam (dated within the last 12 months from the fall start of the nursing program), TB testing, immunization records including Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR), Tetanus, diphtheria, Pertussis (TDaP), Varicella (chicken pox), Hepatitis B, flu vaccine (in season), COVID vaccine, a negative urine drug screen on first attempt (marijuana use is still prohibited), and pass a criminal background check by nursing office deadline dates provided in the emailed packet. Drug screens may need to be repeated throughout the program as required by clinical agencies. Students will also need to meet any other future health/clinical/agency requirements as specified by the agencies.
- Students should have current American Heart Association Basic Life Support course for Professional Healthcare Providers. The course needs to include an in person return demonstration of performance skills (adult, child, infant, and AED use). 100% online courses are not accepted.
- Students who do not meet the Nursing Department requirements/deadlines will be cancelled (see other notes).
- An authorization permit to register for courses will be issued by the Nursing Office upon completion of any requirements as specified in email correspondence. Students are emailed when petitions are entered, and students may then register for courses.
