Nursing: Practical Certificate (PN)

Schoolcraft program code # 1YC.0P017/1YC.00017

Nursing courses are open only to students who are officially admitted to the nursing career ladder curriculum. The practical nursing program is approved by the Michigan Board of Nursing and accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN). This program provides basic nursing theory and clinical practice in caring for adults, children, and families to prepare graduates for entry-level positions in long-term care facilities, medical offices, hospitals, home health, and other community settings. Students who satisfactorily complete the practical nursing program are eligible to apply to take the National Council Licensure Examination-Practical Nurse (NCLEX-PN) as a step in obtaining licensure as a licensed practical nurse (LPN). Students who wish to pursue this option must successfully complete the Advanced Concepts in Practical Nursing course at the end of the first academic year along with the other first-year courses within the associate degree of nursing program.

Students need to complete the prerequisite courses and meet other admission requirements. Students may defer their admission only one time, otherwise, the student will need to reapply and meet the application requirements at that time. Students who do not meet nursing department deadlines or have been accepted to the program and then are “no call, no show” to start the program will be canceled and not eligible to reapply to the program in the future. After August 1 for fall start cohorts, and after October 1 for winter start cohorts, preference will be given for students to be pulled up to spots vacated at the last minute by other students, with students who have completed the NURS 104 - Pharmacology for Nurses  course or the NATP 115 - Nursing Assistant Course  or are currently enrolled in either course and have current passing status.

Nursing courses must be taken in sequence. Courses typically include one day of theory with two days of clinical. Clinical sessions are offered on day or afternoon shifts with the potential for weekend rotations. Clinical rotation schedules will be determined dependent upon clinical site availability. A minimum grade of 80% in each nursing course is required for progression to the next course.  Academic courses, other than nursing, must be completed according to application requirements. Computer lab use and computer testing are required in this program. Students will need to have a computer device for home and on-campus use that meets the requirements provided prior to entry to the program. See Information Security Policy 1090 at www.schoolcraft.edu for more information. Students must furnish and maintain uniforms and supplies as required by the department and clinical facilities. Students must meet health and clinical requirements, have a negative drug screen on the first attempt (marijuana use still prohibited) and pass a criminal background check. This program is offered at the Livonia Main Campus.

Students selecting the practical nursing certificate option at the end of the first year of the NCLC sequence may then complete the registered nursing program without further application or admission requirements. Students who satisfactorily complete the program requirements qualify for a certificate of program completion. This program requires students to complete a specific list of requirements before being officially admitted into the program.  Students are listed in a pre-program code while the application requirements are being met.  The full program start date and implementation of program code may be dependent on space availability.  Requirements are listed online at https://www.schoolcraft.edu/admissions/apply-to-sc/students-with-selective-admissions/. Contact the Admissions and Welcome Center at 734-462-4426 or admissions@schoolcraft.edu to complete an application.

Not all courses are offered each semester.  Students should work with an academic advisor to develop a schedule that will work for them. Students planning to transfer should check the transfer institution’s requirements/guides or discuss their options with an academic advisor. Number of credits may vary depending on the course selection.

Programs Requiring Licensure

Federal regulations require Schoolcraft College to publicly disclose, for each educational program designed to meet the educational requirements for a specific professional license or certification required for employment in an occupation (or advertised as meeting a requirement for employment), information about whether program completion would meet those requirements in a state. These public disclosure requirements apply to all programs, regardless of their modality (i.e., on-ground, online, and hybrid programs).

Please see the disclosure related to the educational requirements for professional licensure and certification.
