ECE 250 - Literacy and Numerical Thinking

Description: This course explores literacy and numerical thinking in children. An emphasis will be placed on constructivist and sociolinguistic views of learning. Experiential exercises, course readings and activity development will provide students with opportunities to plan developmentally appropriate learning activities, to record observations of children and to generate analysis that support literacy and numerical thinking development. Students will have hands-on learning experiences to share their lessons on literacy and numerical thinking with children. Michigan Central Registry Clearance by the Michigan Department of Human Services is required for this course. This course requires all students must meet the requirements of a criminal background check.

Prerequisites: ECE 110  or EDUC 110 .

  1. Summarize the developmental nature of literacy and numerical thinking in children.
  2. Appraise the value of classroom organization to promote literacy instruction.
  3. Assess how children use mathematical concepts during their daily activities through naturalistic, informal and structured experiences.
  4. Construct developmentally appropriate literacy activities for children.
  5. Construct developmentally appropriate numerical thinking activities for children.
  6. Specify how to involve children’s families and the community in literacy and math development.
  7. Incorporate literacy and math concepts to practical classroom teaching.
  8. Teach the Child Protection Law and Mandated Reporting of Suspected Abuse and Neglect.
  9. Produce teaching activities that align to current educational outcomes.
