DMS 220 - Sonography Clinical 2 Credits: 6 Lecture Contact Hours: 3 Off Site Contact Hours Without Faculty: 32-40 Description: This course continues to add experience to the student’s ability to perform ultrasound procedures under the direct supervision of a qualified sonographer. This is the second of three courses designed to broaden technical skills in a clinical setting. Clinical competencies will correspond to completed didactic work performed in the lab. Students will be evaluated utilizing performance standards. This course will meet for 480-600 clinical hours in 8-10 hour shifts.
Prerequisites: DMS 212 with a minimum grade of 3.0. Corequisites: None. Recommended: None.

- Demonstrate professional interaction/communication skills with the patient, clinical supervisor, department personnel and radiologist.
- Educate other health care providers and the public in appropriate applications of ultrasound, including medical terminology, pertinent clinical signs, symptoms and laboratory tests.
- Demonstrate clinical safety and decision making.
- Perform sonography imaging under direct/indirect supervision.
- Demonstrate imaging competencies of the aorta, liver, gall bladder and biliary system, pancreas and renal kidneys.
- Perform or assist in fetal, brain, thyroid, breast, prostate and small part exams.
- Distinguish normal vs abnormal anatomy.
- Distinguish pathology of pertinent exams studied in the lab.
- Demonstrate accurate image acquisition and analysis.
- Examine invasive procedure protocol and sterile technique.
- Demonstrate appropriate responses to critically ill patients and medical emergencies.
- Demonstrate advanced scanning techniques for trauma and critical care patients.
- Create quality diagnostic studies that demonstrate appropriate anatomy.
