DMS 220 - Sonography Clinical 2

Description: This course continues to add experience to the student’s ability to perform ultrasound procedures under the direct supervision of a qualified sonographer. This is the second of three courses designed to broaden technical skills in a clinical setting. Clinical competencies will correspond to completed didactic work performed in the lab. Students will be evaluated utilizing performance standards. This course will meet for 480-600 clinical hours in 8-10 hour shifts.

 

Prerequisites: DMS 210  with a minimum grade of 3.0.

Course Competencies
  1. Demonstrate professional interaction/communication skills with the patient, clinical supervisor, department personnel and radiologist.
  2. Educate other health care providers and the public in appropriate applications of ultrasound, including medical terminology, pertinent clinical signs, symptoms and laboratory tests.
  3. Demonstrate clinical safety and decision making.
  4. Perform sonography imaging under direct/indirect supervision.
  5. Demonstrate imaging competencies of the aorta, liver, gall bladder and biliary system, pancreas and renal kidneys.
  6. Perform or assist in fetal, brain, thyroid, breast, prostate and small part exams.
  7. Distinguish normal vs abnormal anatomy.
  8. Distinguish pathology of pertinent exams studied in the lab.
  9. Demonstrate accurate image acquisition and analysis.
  10. Examine invasive procedure protocol and sterile technique.
  11. Demonstrate appropriate responses to critically ill patients and medical emergencies.
  12. Demonstrate advanced scanning techniques for trauma and critical care patients.
  13. Create quality diagnostic studies that demonstrate appropriate anatomy.
