Diagnostic Medical Sonography AAS Program Application Information

The Diagnostic Medical Sonography program provides the knowledge that will enable students to enter the workforce as entry-level technologists. The didactic and clinical learning experience courses require approximately 40 hours of participation per week in the second year of the program.

Educational facilities located within Schoolcraft College include state-of art classroom and clinical training resources designed to promote an exceptional educational experience.

Successful completion of the program requirements allows graduates to sit for the American Registry in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) exam.

Application Requirements

The Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program requires students to complete a specific list of requirements before being officially admitted into the program. Students are listed in a pre-program code while the application requirements are being met. The full program start date and implementation of program code may be dependent on space availability. Requirements are listed in the application. To be admitted to the program you must complete the following:

Preparing to Apply to the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program (DMS)

1. Apply to Schoolcraft College	Apply to Schoolcraft College on-line at www.schoolcraft.edu
2. Transcripts	It is recommended you request official undergraduate transcripts from all colleges and universities previously attended. Transcripts must be sent directly from the issuing college or university to the Schoolcraft College Records Office. To confirm that transcripts have been received, contact the Answer Center & Help Line at 734-462-4426.
3. Advising	The Diagnostic Medical Sonography program requires minimum assessment levels of course work in the areas of math, reading, and writing. Students should meet with an academic advisor to develop an academic plan. Students with prior college level work or a degree may be exempt from general college placement testing. Students who have submitted ACT or SAT scores that are less than three years old to the Admissions Office may also be exempt from assessment testing. Contact the Academic Advising Center at 734-462-4429 to make an appointment to discuss an academic plan and preparation for the TEAS (DMS entrance) exam. Diagnostic Medical Sonography students should possess and maintain the following to be able to adequately communicate, make decisions, manipulate equipment, perform procedures, and provide indirect or direct quality care for clients in a variety of healthcare settings: Sufficient intellectual, psychological, and emotional capabilities Sufficient capacity to concentrate for sustained periods of time Sufficient communication skills Sufficient visual acuity Sufficient auditory perception Sufficient gross and fine motor coordination Sufficient physical abilities and strength required to push, pull, transfer or move objects up to approximately 35 pounds utilizing safe patient handling techniques Sufficient physical stamina to remain standing for long periods of time Students potentially needing accommodations may review further information at http://www.schoolcraft.edu/dss/disability-support-services. 4. College Prerequisites required for program entry	Complete: HIT 100 - Introduction to Medical Terminology (2.0+) DMS 100 - Introduction to Diagnostic Medical Sonography (3.0+) MATH 102 - Technical Mathematics or MATH 113 - Intermediate Algebra for College Students + (3.0+) BIOL 236 - Human Anatomy and Physiology (3.0+) or BIOL 237 - Principles of Human Anatomy and Physiology 1 and BIOL 238 - Principles of Human Anatomy and Physiology 2 (3.0+) PHYS 123 - Applied Physics (3.0+) COMA 103 - Fundamentals of Speech (3.0+) Overall GPA 2.5+ There are no expiration dates for acceptable BIOL courses.
5. Admission Exam	The ATI TEAS Exam (Test of Essential Academic Skills) is a multiple-choice exam that must be taken using the online version. The TEAS Exam includes: 31% Reading: Key Ideas & Details (15%), Craft & Structure (9%), Integration of Knowledge & Ideas (7%) 16% English and Language: Convention of Standard English (6%), Knowledge of Language (6%), Vocabulary Acquisition (4%) 31% Science: Human Anatomy & Physiology (21%), Life & Physical Science (5%), Scientific Reasoning (5%) 22% Mathematics: Number & Algebra (16%), Measurement & Data (6%) Minimum TEAS Exam scores required are: Composite: 60% (Adjusted Individual Total Score), 68% Reading, 60% English, 60% Math, 50% Science. Achieve the required minimum scores on the ONLINE TEAS Exam (Test of Essential Academic Skills) within two attempts. Students may take the TEAS exam a maximum of 2 times within a 12-month period. The highest score for each section of the two attempts will be accepted. Ex: Students may not take a third attempt until the first test date attempt expires. The maximum number of attempts on the TEAS exam is four (4) attempts overall. Students must complete all sections of the TEAS Exam with maximum effort on each attempt for scores to be accepted and composite score must still be 60% or higher. TEAS online exam scores are not accepted from other institutions. All TEAS testing will need to be taken in person at the Schoolcraft College Testing Center. Students who may need academic testing accommodations should meet with the Disability Support Services Office (734-462-4330) prior to taking the TEAS exam to determine potential accommodations. The Schoolcraft College Personal and Professional Learning Department has a preparation course available to assist with test success http://www.schoolcraft.edu/PPL and the ATI website also has study materials and practice exams available. The Schoolcraft College Learning Support Services department also provides free personalized TEAS prep plans for success through one-on-one and group formats. To inquire about support for the TEAS, please contact teasprep@schoolcraft.edu (734-462-7359). TEAS Exam attempts at Schoolcraft College must be scheduled in advance. Fees paid are non-refundable and non-transferrable. Students needing to change testing dates will need to pay the full fee. 6. Cumulative GPA	Attain a 2.5/C+ or better cumulative grade point average for all Diagnostic Medical Sonography program supportive and prerequisite courses.
7. Volunteer Hours	Complete 20 hours of volunteer hours. Must be in a hospital or nursing home. (see page 13 for hours verification document) Must be verified by program director.
8. Information Session	Attend Diagnostic Medical Sonography program information session. Sessions will be held in Fall and Winter semesters.

Applying to DMS

9. Apply to Diagnostic Medical Sonography	Complete the student portion of the application and meet with an academic advisor for academic planning and to sign off on the application. The academic advisor will submit the application packet to the program administrators. Applications are reviewed on a continual basis, students will receive an acceptance letter via email from the Medical Imaging Department that states the year, and cohort the student will be able to start the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program. Students who do not respond to correspondence by deadlines will be cancelled by the Medical Imaging Department. All required prerequisites must be completed (with final course grade on transcript) prior to submitting application.
10. Hepatitis B Vaccine	Students who do not have the Hepatitis B vaccine three shot series already completed should begin the series while waiting to start the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program.
11. CPR Course for Healthcare Professionals	Students should wait to complete an American Heart Association Basic Life Support course for Professional Healthcare Providers until approximately 2 months prior to clinical rotations in the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program. Students need to complete a course that includes an in-person demonstration of the performance skills (adult, child, infant and AED use). 100% online courses are not accepted.
12. Other Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program Requirements	Students will be emailed additional information about Orientation sessions and other health/clinical/program requirements prior to student’s program start date. Correspondence will only be sent to Schoolcraft College email.

Acceptance to DMS and prior to starting the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program

The order of acceptance of qualified applicants will be based on the date the College receives a valid application. An application is valid only if all of the requirements listed in this document have been met.
Any incomplete applications received from a student will be returned. Applications may be resubmitted when all of the requirements have been met.
In the event more than one qualified student applies on the same day and time, the applications will be ordered based on highest cumulative grade point average in the prerequisite/supportive courses.
Accepted students will be emailed an information packet from the Medical Imaging department to Schoolcraft College email only. Students are responsible for maintaining current contact information for all college communications. Students should get their college email forwarded to their primary email so as not to miss any communications.
Students may defer their admission only one time, otherwise, the student will need to reapply and meet the application requirements at that time.
Students who do not meet Medical Imaging department deadlines or have been accepted to the program and then are “no call, no show” to start the program, will be cancelled and not eligible to reapply to the program in the future.
After one week of Spring semester start date for Spring start cohorts, preference will be given for students to be pulled up to spots vacated, with students who have completed the DMS 100 Introduction to Diagnostic Medical Sonography OR are currently enrolled in this course and have current passing status. (Requirements subject to change. Students will be sent emails with requirements to Schoolcraft College emails only.)
Participate in a mandatory Diagnostic Medical Sonography student informational session to discuss educational goals, learning techniques/strategies, and recommendations for success in the program by Medical Imaging department deadline dates.
Mandatory volunteer hours - must provide documentation of hours signed by the supervisor.

REQUIREMENTS PRIOR TO DMS PROGRAM CLINICAL ROTATIONS

Complete all health/clinical placement requirements and provide documentation including a health questionnaire/physical exam (dated within the last 12 months from the fall start of the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program), TB testing, immunization records including Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR), Tetanus, diphtheria, Pertussis (TdaP), Varicella (chicken pox), Hepatitis B, flu vaccine (in season), COVID vaccine, a negative urine drug screen on first attempt (marijuana use is still prohibited), and pass a criminal background check by DMS office.
Drug screens may need to be repeated throughout the program as required by clinical agencies. Students will also need to meet any other future health/clinical/agency requirements as specified by the agencies.
An authorization to register is only issued by the Medical Imaging department upon completion of the any specified requirements.

Open/Supporting Courses

Admission to the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program is not necessary to register for the course listed below. The following course is open to all Schoolcraft students who have met the course prerequisite(s) (see the College Catalog).
