The sound recording technology certificate will provide the student with skills important to the apprentice at recording studios and for quality home-studio production. The program will prepare the student to understand the functions of audio signals and the sound reproduction equipment. The program will also acquaint the student with emerging audio formats. Listening in the manner of a recording engineer will be stressed as well as some fundamental music skills important to the musician’s point of view. Technological changes directly related to the recording industry are frequently introduced. The program is committed to staying current and will help the student understand new directions in technology.
Students who satisfactorily complete the program requirements qualify for a certificate of program completion.
Program Outcomes
- Produce high quality recordings of acoustic and/or electronic musical performances
- Apply techniques for assessing and improving indoor acoustics for optimal sound recording and reproduction
- Operate common equipment and software found in a recording studio’s control room
- Demonstrate aural skills that are relevant to the assessment of sound quality and listening aesthetics in recorded music or speech
- Demonstrate musical skills that are relevant to common music production tasks
- Integrate multiple hardware and software components used in professional recording and music production
- Correct common software and hardware-related problems which may be encountered during sessions
- Compare modern equipment, software, and recording techniques to those of earlier eras, and use the best combination of those elements to achieve the desired results in a recording project
- Demonstrate techniques used in sound-for-picture, broadcast, and surround-sound audio production, which adhere to standards set forth in the film, television, audio, and video industries
- Using musical and technical skills developed through training, compose and produce original works of music, unassisted by other musicians
- Evaluate emerging technologies.
- Assess their impact on the recording and music industries, as well as popular and global culture
