The basis of sociology is about understanding and helping people and communities. Schoolcraft offers a variety of courses in this discipline, including the principles of sociology, social problems, marriage and family, cultural diversity, urban sociology, and the individual, giving students insight into what rules govern our behavior in group situations. These courses help students understand economic, social, political, and religious customs and societal issues like racism, sexism, and crime.
Students can also get hands-on experience by getting involved with campus events and organizations as part of their coursework, or by engaging in service-learning and social work job shadowing. Courses in sociology can help prepare students for careers in social work, criminal justice, child welfare, international relations, healthcare, or gerontology.
Students interested in studying Sociology should talk to their Academic Advisor about transfer guides and articulation agreements with Schoolcraft College. Students interested in studying Sociology at a 4-year university may be interested in completing the Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degree at Schoolcraft College.
